Look for one that’s active and curious. He/she sould be just as interested in checking you out as you are in him/her.

You want one that will be calm when picked up. Some places may let you handle them, others will not, but a person at the pet store should be able to.

The eyes should be clear and open.

Look for any burns, missing toes, sores, wounds, or areas with missing scales.

Look for any obvious parasites (mites), particularly around the eyes and joints. Thesse may appear like a tan powder of a black/brown spot. At 11 months your dragon should be eating large crickets. Look at the space between the reptiles eyes; that’s how large a prey item they should be eating. Any bigger, when eaten, can cause bowel obstruction, chokeing, or paralysis. Cricket feedings for a subadult, like yours, should only be once a day. I usually feed about 1 cricket per inch of body length, not including tail. Of course, this is just a general guide, a few more than that doesn’t hurt, just don’t over do it.

See this site for a great veggie list: http://www.greenigsociety.org/foodchart.htm This food chart tells you everything about proper veggies to feed. Even though it’s a site gear towards iguanas, the veggie info is still good for any reptile that can eat them. Use staple greens in every feeding (collard greens, endive, watercress, escarole, etc.) otherwise, variety is key, so mix it up often.

I usually feed one or the other; bugs or veggies, not both at the same time. I don’t want them to fill up on one and not eat the other. Your dragon should have a diet that is 50/50 veggie and bug, as it should be about half size. When it’s full grown at about 2 years old, the diet should shift to 80% veggie and 20% bug.

What can you do if your bearded dragon causes rash?

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

Question by Brandy A: What can you do if your bearded dragon causes rash?

My son has a new bearded dragon which he loves. He now has a terrible red rash on his face and neck. What can I do to the dragon or his cage to deal with this?
He has ground walnut shells and eats crickets. It is only my sons face and neck that break out, and he cuddles him. I’m going to clean the aquarium really well and see how that works.

how much does it cost to feed a bearded dragon?

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

Question by Matthew: how much does it cost to feed a bearded dragon?

How much is the weekly cost to feed a bearded dragon at each stage of life. Also I saw some pellet and dried insect mix bearded dragon food. would that be good to feed it and would it be the cheapest way without taking nutrition from the dragon.
Also, would the canned crickets be more expensive than live ones.

Best answer:

Answer by KimbeeJ
Babies are expensive to feed. They can eat up to 100 crickets a day! Most people order them on line by the 1000′s. When they are older it’s not so bad. Expect to pay about .00 for 50 superworms or .13 cents a cricket at a pet store. An adult beardie can eat 25 supers a week and an equal number of crickets. They also need to have a fresh salad made every day. The pellets and dried foods are garbage…not good nutrition at all. Here’s a good website for nutrition:

Q&A: Can I give my bearded dragons a stuffed animal?

Question by LifeStory: Can I give my bearded dragons a stuffed animal?

I have two bearded dragons(about five months old). Would it be safe to give them a little stuffed animal?

Best answer:

Answer by Dion J
No.
Lizards do not play, and would receive no benefit from a stuffed animal. In all likelihood, all they would do is poop on it and get their claws snagged.
