Q&A: How much does it cost for everything a bearded dragon needs?

Question by Sara: How much does it cost for everything a bearded dragon needs?

I really need to know the price of everything you need to take care of a bearded dragon. Cause I am getting one and I need to know how much money I need to save up.

In England, You can pay £250 for a vivarium, £60 for the actual dragon, £20 each for logs, rocks etc. and about £12 every 2 weeks for food.

Then there’s £20 for a light, £20 for a heat lamp and £20 for a heat pad!!

I got everything free because my dads friend didn’t want him anymore!! His kids lost interest after the other BD died. But Max is great and is gorgeous!!

It is very expensive!!

Its quite expensive to be honest, but once you set everything up it is pretty cheap to maintain him.
The UVB light (which needs to be the length of the cage) usually costs anywhere from 15-40 dollars. I go to http://www.petsolutions.com for good prices. You also need to get calcium powder with and without D3 and a multivitamin powder. If you get a young bearded dragon, crickets are going to be your worst enemy. They need to be fed as much as they will eat 3 times a day which can get up to 100 crickets a DAY plus a bowl of greens in their dish at all times. You can also feed occasional superworms and they can eat roaches, silkworms, and hornworms every day. Once they are older they will eat crickets every other day and greens everyday so the cost will go down. You will also need to buy a heating light that will get your cage up to 100-105 in the basking area, which means you are also going to need a thermometer with a probe…not those crappy stick on ones (they arent accurate at all.) You are also going to need some sort of platform for your beardie to climb on to bask and something he can hide in ( I use bricks for both.) The substrate cost can be anywhere from free to about $8. DO NOT USE SAND OR ANY OTHER LOOSE SUBSTRATE…this includes calci-sand which is even worse. This will lead to impaction and the death of your beardie. Instead of loose substrate you can use paper towels, newspaper, repticarpet, or tile for a more natural look.
The cage itself needs to be atleast a 40 gallon breeder to assure enough room to roam around. You are also going to need a salad bowl and a water bowl.

Well I think that covers it all. Good websites for more info are repticzone.com and beautifuldragons.com
    Good luck!

you have to consider that if you want to care for your beardie properly, your expenses won’t end after setting up a terrarium. uv lights need regular replacement (every six months), and feeding silkworms (which is the best food for the protein portion of their diet) will cost you about $10 per can if you buy them online and can get as pricey as $40-50 in a local pet store (if you’re lucky enough to find one that carries them to begin with–I guess that depends on a city you live in, but it’s the case in Los Angeles area).
